Ana Tijoux Rhymes from Santiago to New York (MP3)

Old school hip hop meets global perspective

“What’s up, New York?!!” screamed Chilean rapper Ana Tijoux at Manhattan’s Le Poisson Rouge during her first US tour last earlier this month. “I’ve always wanted to say ‘What’s Up, New York?’” she told the crowd, a wide smile across her face.

Tijoux had been waiting a long time for that moment, and now is her moment. Her whirlwind string of performances (more than a dozen dates in 30 days) to support her new solo album, 1977 (Nacional Records), kicked off at SXSW in Austin and took her to more than 10 cities in the US and Canada. No doubt, an ambitious tour for a Spanish-language female rapper barely known here. But Tijoux’s easy flow, sharp verbal skills and confidence clearly appeal beyond language and genres.

Choc Quib Town: Colombia’s Other Rhythm Nation (MP3)

Hip-hop trio on the road with new album "Oro"

A world away from the rest of the country, and an ocean apart from anywhere else, this is the last place you’d expect to find b-boys and girls. But since Choc Quib Town emerged a decade ago, the Colombian hip-hop trio, comprised of Tostao and fellow emcees Goyo and Slow, is putting Chocó on the map, both nationally and, with their debut U.S. release of “Oro” this week, to hip-hop fans beyond. Unlike Colombian rap groups that came before—Bogotá crews that essentially imitated Run DMC in Spanish—Choc Quib Town uses hip-hop not to obscure but to reveal their own culture.

B. DOLAN: 5 Ways to Bleed Your Customer (Video)

Firsthand account of corporate world's ills

In the song “50 Ways to Bleed Your Customer,” from the Fallen House, Sunken City album, I play a cynical character giving advice to the listener on how to get ahead. When URB offered me this space, I figured I’d take the opportunity to dissect the song a little bit and talk about the meaning and issues behind some of the songs lyrics.

1. “Treat the side effects with side effects, supply the next disorder.”
Common side-effects of anti-depressant drugs may include: dry mouth, constipation, bladder problems, blurred vision, potentially serious or even fatalserotonin syndrome, fever, confusion, muscle rigidity, cardiac, liver, and kidney problems, and thoughts of suicide (no shit).

Gui Boratto – Renaissance: The Mix Collection (Review)

Gui Boratto

Renaissance: The Mix Collection

Released by Renaissance

When one of electronic music’s most respected staples, Renaissance, and Brazilian DJ and producer Gui Boratto teamed up for the first time, the result can surely be compared to a spacey sound journey through an atmospheric rainforest. Boratto gets in the mix with this groovy third release for the Renaissance name, following the likes of M.A.N.D.Y, Dave Seaman and James Zabiella. For the mix, Boratto picked tracks by some of his favorite artists and producers of the moment—Tricky, Josh Wink, Martin Buttrich, Lusine, Christian Smith, Mathew Jonson, and Bomb the Base, to name a few—as well as his own material, including four never heard before productions. While one might get locked in from song two, which is a John Tejada remix of Boratto’s 2009 “Take My Breath Away,” almost every song is a trip of its own, including Tricky’s “Past Mistake” making for a surprisingly eerie, yet beautiful ending.

On the Road with Kenan Bell, part three

Love in Nashville and a zebra print Snuggie

Feb 8, 2010
Day 4 Part 1
11:47 am

Is it still Groundhog Day? I am starting to feel like Bill Murray. Another morning in a budget hotel spent sleeping next to Black Matt in my zebra print Snuggie while Danny and Milk fight over the stiff, cold hotel covers. The cleaning crew began banging on the door almost an hour ago, signaling it was time to wake up. They had already come by our room on two separate occasions because check out was at 11, but we vehemently professed that we were getting up and leaving soon. Remember when you begged the Moms for 15 more minutes of sleep before getting ready for school only to fall back asleep for an extra hour of Zzz’s and wind [sic] up being late for first period?
