Junior Boys – Begone Dull Care (Review)

Junior Boys

Begone Dull Care

Sometimes less is more, as the adage goes. Thankfully, Junior Boys gets it. This restraint is precisely what makes their aesthetic so appealing'far from electronic music that ODs on glitches, blips and production acrobatics, these Canadians tread cautiously, creating carefully-crafted, intricate beats and effects.

On Begone Dull Care, Junior Boys step away from their heartbreak-driven first two albums, embracing a warmer, fuller sound that more prominently features Jeremy Greenspan's breathy vocals. Devoted fans need not worry, though'the album still holds the melancholic ...

James Yuill – Turning Down Water for Air (Review)

James Yuill

Turning Down Water for Air

One of the forerunners of the 'folktronica' genre, the London-based James Yuill's North American debut, Turning Down Water for Air, delves deeper into his fusion of live instrumentation and laptop wizardry. Yuill brings in his acoustic guitar, cello, and percussion against minimal electronic beats to create subtle, sleepy tracks. Dan Deacon – Bromst (Review)

Dan Deacon

Bromst

I first became acquainted with Baltimore artist Dan Deacon at a live show in a small club in Paris in 2007. Anyone who's seen this dude live will tell you that his shows are not for the faint of heart or weak stamina--as he was getting down and dirty with crowd, spinning from the dance floor amidst the throngs of Euro electro-freaks and study-abroad kids, all that could be seen was the telltale flashing green skull that he (or someone?) lifted up and down like a torch proclaiming Deacon ...

Flosstradamus and Caroline Polachek :: Chicago-Brooklyn collab gets that green

“If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” seems to be the operative adage in Green Label Sound’s philosophy. In this modern age of file sharing and ADD-style consumption of music thanks to the almighty blogosphere, we live in a culture dominated and dictated by “the single” (this really goes without saying). As record companies and album sales feel the heat, Green Label got with the program; backed by Mountain Dew (yes, Mountain Dew), GLS showcases independent artists through releasing exclusive tracks for a free download. After the success of working with dance duo Matt and Kim and The Cool Kids, Flosstradamus got the fateful tap on the shoulder to release an original collaboration track, a first for both the label and the Chicago DJ duo.

Kinky – Barracuda (Review)

Kinky

Barracuda

Kinky's fourth album, Barracuda, arrives on the scene at just the right time. While these five guys hailing from Monterrey, Mexico are no strangers to fame or popularity on an international level, their resonance in the American mainstream culture's consciousness is long overdue. With all the popularity of European artists in recent years, hipster-driven or otherwise, maybe the U.S. is finally ready to embrace music that's (gasp!) not sung in English. Many may have caught their high-energy live show at last year's Coachella, or seen them touring with ...
