Live Review: Thievery Corporation, Fitz and the Tantrums, and AM and Shawn Lee @ The Greek Theatre, Los Angeles, CA

A wide range of acts played the Greek Theatre this past Friday, September 9th.  The show included Thievery Corporation, with AM and Shawn Lee and Fitz and the Tantrums opening the night.  The Greek was a perfect fit for these bands, especially since it’s in the middle of Griffith Park.  While still in LA, it feels as though you’re miles away in a remote location.  Although each band has their own distinct sound, they all seamlessly worked well on a single bill.

AM and Shawn Lee started the night strong, but unfortunately, to a very small audience.  It was disappointing to see the size of the crowd in such a large venue, but this did not seem to affect the band.  At one point in the set, they tried to get the audience engaged in a sing-a-long, however it was …

Ghostland Observatory- Codename: Rondo (Review) (Review)

Ghostland Observatory

Codename: Rondo

Released by Trashy Moped

Ghostland Observatory’s fourth release Codename: Rondo is an interesting collection of songs.  Even for Ghostland Obervatory, it’s a bit weird, but it’s refreshing to hear such a hodgepodge of sounds in one album. Nothing about Codename: Rondo is consistent.  Each song seems to be more bizarre from the previous one.  The first track, “Glitter,” is the strongest song on the album and sounds more like some of their work from the album Paparazzi Lightning.  “Glitter” is very catchy and has great, danceable beats.  Even if you haven’t seen Ghostland Observatory ...

Free Moral Agents

Control This

Released by Chocolate Industries

Free Moral Agents originally started as a project from Mars Volta keyboardist, Ikey Owens, but now, the project has transformed into a full-on band.  Control This has been in the works for a long time and is a great fusion of sounds, mixing elements from different genres.  Be prepared to set aside an hour to listen to this album, it deserves your full, undivided attention. Free Moral Agents are not afraid to experiment with their music, and give each song its own distinct sound.  "Systole" takes you on a haunting, ...

Abe Vigoda- Crush (Review) (Review)

Abe Vigoda

Crush

Released by PostPresentMedium

Crush exemplifies how much Abe Vigoda has grown in every way possible, they have left their punk training wheels behind.  Abe Vigoda were one of the bands at the forefront of the Smell scene, and set themselves apart with their tropical punk sound.  Like many of the other bands involved with this scene, their sound was in its beginning stages, and was way lo-fi.  Keep I mind, punk is a genre representing the voice of the youth. While some of Abe Vigoda’s counterparts have disbanded rather than forging ahead (I'm ...

The Drums

The Drums

Released by Downtown

The Drums debut, self-titled album is a great collection of simple, beachy pop songs.  They follow the current resurgence of surf rock, yet they put their own twist on it by mixing genres.  Like their contemporaries, they have catchy lyrics, but they have managed to incorporate some post-punk undertones.  The resulting sound is as though synthesizers and drum machines were brought to the beach. The album is overall fun, though it is at times repetitive and is best enjoyed in small doses.  "Let's Go Surfing" sparkles and on the surface, ...
