Wire – Red Barked Tree (Review)

Wire

Red Barked Tree

Released by Pinkflag

There will always be something tantalizing about the three-piece band that sparked a million basement musicians to play more feverishly. Responsible for memorable tracks such as “I Feel Mysterious” and the epic debut Pinkflag, many things have been said about post-punk pioneers Wire, but perhaps “balanced” is not a popular description. However, after a career spanning the decades, Wire understands how to pace an album to foster equilibrium. Red Barked Tree embraces the juxtaposition of rough and polished elements, which is a recognizable and indelible link to the band’s impressive discography.

Antony and The Johnsons – “Swanlights” (Review)

Antony and The Johnsons

Swanlights

Released by Secretly Canadian

Antony Hegarty continues his string of recent success by unveiling an exuberant and mysterious collection of tracks on Swanlights. “Everything is New” he sings on the opening track of the same title, and listeners will agree this album extends the scope of an Antony and The Johnsons album. From the magical “The Great White Ocean” to the piano-driven “Ghost,” the album’s movement is inspiring. For those unfamiliar with Antony and his operatic voice, Swanlights may seem too dramatic as it begins, but Antony invents twists and turns to shake it up. He spikes “I’m In Love” with sonorous strings and sprinkles “Salt Silver Oxygen” with delicate winds for a frolicking escapade. Björk joins Antony in a sumptuous and sparse call and response on “Fletta.”

of Montreal – “False Priest” (Review)

of Montreal

False Priest

Released by Polyvinyl

Kevin Barnes is one of the finest pop craftsmen in the business and it’s precisely because he—and his band, of Montreal—doesn’t play by anyone else’s rules. From the tricked out cover art designed by Barnes’ wife and his brother to guest vocalists Solange Knowles and Janelle Monae to the hybrid of the heartfelt and the humorous, False Priest is one of the year’s most indispensable releases. The Athens, Georgia based quintet follows up the seminal releases of Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? and Skeletal Lamping with a bristling collection of tracks mixing Barnes’ brand of psychedelia with R&B influences and a heady dose of Parliament-Funkadelic.

Stars – The Five Ghosts (Review)

Stars

The Five Ghosts

Released by Soft Revolution Records

At its best moments, the latest effort from Stars yearns for the flicker flame of "Set Yourself on Fire," but it is neither as gorgeous as nor is it as jarring a mixed bag as "In Our Bedroom After the War." It may be called "The Five Ghosts," but the irresistible and marvelous "Set Yourself on Fire" continues to haunt Stars.
