Adele – 21 (Review)

Adele

21

Released by Columbia

Despite doing pretty well for herself with 2008 debut record 19, Adele's really arrived in 2011. 19 saw her vying for the same crown as, like, a jillion other soul-y, British, white girls (see: Amy Winehouse, Candie Payne, Duffy, Joss Stone. Lily Allen, if you're feeling friendly?). The album chart-topped in Adele's native UK , peaking at number 10 Stateside despite winning two Grammy Awards. It'd be surprising if, in a week, her newest, 21, didn't debut at number one globally. If 19 was Adele's timid introduction to court, ...

Kid Cudi – Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager (Review)

Kid Cudi

Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager

Released by Universal Motown

We know a lot more about Kid Cudi than we did when he released his first album, last year's Man on The Moon: End of Day. Between then and now he's made another club hit with David Guetta in the vein of Crooker's "Day N Nite" rework, landed a semi-starring role on an HBO show and publicly admitted to hard drug abuse. There's a lot more to the self-proclaimed Lonely Stoner than we might have initially assumed. On Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager, Cudi ...

The Big Pink – Tapes (Review)

One half of Brit dub-rock duo The Big Pink (behind last year's shouty hit "Dominos"), singer Milo Cordell is keeping the band's momentum afloat with Tapes. A  moody, glitchy 19 track series immersed in the slow, just-out-of-time, electronic patterns (those often suffixed "-gaze") quickly emerging from home studios, both in and out of established music capitals, and kinda-definitely different from the more centerfield music the Big Pink create themselves. Cohesion seeps through the hazy din emanating from Tapes; whether there's a message or not, you can see what Cordell is ...

Bilal – Airtight’s Revenge (Review)

Bilal

Airtight's Revenge

Released by Plug Research

For almost 10 years we've waited, like high school girls by the telephone, for an official follow-up to 2001's 1st Born Second from Bilal, the modern day Curtis Mayfield who falsetto'd over some of a generation's most cult-ish rap cuts. In 2006 there was a blip from Internet-leaked Love For Sale, but it got shelved by the label and passed unheard by many. Over the past decade he's toured and worked regularly, showing up everywhere from semi-obscure Radiohead tribute compilations to songs by Erykah Badu, The Game, Clipse, Solange. ...

Chilly Gonzales – Ivory Tower (Review)

Chilly Gonzales

Ivory Tower

Released by Arts & Crafts

Call him maniacal or too much but you can't deny Chilly Gonzales isn't musical. The Canadian pianist/rapper, now an ex-pat who resides in Paris, makes sure you're aware of this on every project he puts out and Ivory Tower is no exception. His sixth record fuses together the best of his ability, the remarkable piano compositions and absurd lyricism, with production outsourced to Berlin electronic producer Boys Noize. Freeing himself from the meticulousness of production duties means that there's a lot more personality on this record. While that's not necessarily ...
