Alex Chapman isn't any ordinary 19 year-old. While his colleagues had always seemed content with the standard life of a Chicago high schooler, Alex’s love for the arts had always driven him to desire much more. Having started in the music business at the early age of 16, Alex has already worked at such respected companies as The Windish Agency, Rolling Stone, and URB Magazine, to name a few. With an established passion for the music business entact, Alex began interviewing artists via URB two years ago, when he acted as their official correspondent for Lollapalooza. Talking with popular indie outfits like Chairlift, Friendly Fires and Lykke Li, Alex was quickly bitten by the interviewing bug. Now living in New York, the NYU freshman has taken his abilities to the next level, creating his own interviewing entity (with the help of branding geniuses @AtSuperfun) aptly entitled “The Real Alex Chapman”. In addition, Alex has very recently landed an editorial apprenticeship at the illustrious Paper Magazine, and continues to write for URB regularly. "I think the world of mainstream media is under the impression that they have to pre-package everything as simplistically as possible in order for the consumer to get it," says Alex, who is now based in the Greenwich Village area. "But the reality is that there are large groups of people, especially young people, who are smarter than that, and who really want to get to know these artists as musicians, and as human beings. I came to the quick realization that there was nobody out there really talking to these artists in a relatable way. Upon coming to that conclusion, I went straight to work.” Having already interviewed artists like Skrillex, Wiz Khalifa, Matt and Kim, Soulja Boy, Semi Precious Weapons, Keri Hilson and a host of others in a matter of 2.5 months, the project is already off to a strong start. And with an ever-improving production crew and a immense number of acts slated for interviews in 2011, it seems as though Alex Chapman is destined to be far more than just your average kid.

“The Harder They Hate, The Harder I Go”: Ciara talks to @TheAlexChapman

Since the dawn of time, the music industry has bred their pop stars young. Britney Spears sold 20 million copies worldwide at the ripe age of 19, NSync began to headline tours in Europe as arguably post-pubescent 17 year-olds, and the late Aaliyah recorded the celebrated Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number with a mere 14 years under her belt. With all this being somewhat common knowledge (thanks, WikiLeaks), it should’ve come to no surprise to me that Ciara is only 25.  But when you take a gander at Ciara’s impressive career stats— Over 7 million records sold worldwide, Grammy nominations, and a consistently strong presence on the charts—it’s worth stating that the singer wasn’t born into the entertainment business like some of her contemporaries.

“I’m a military baby—My father …

Auburn (Vyle + Eliot Lipp), “Ultramodern Verandah” (MP3)

Check out the dudes Eliot Lipp and Vyle back with a vengeance via their electro hip-hop collective, Auburn. The production is absolutely ridiculous, with spiraling synths and banging snares that make your brain wanna explode (in a really good way), and Vyle’s flow has never sounded better: think distorted word vomit with a strangely avant-garde swag that makes it incredibly listenable. Or don’t think, and just listen to the damn thing. If Josh Glazer likes it, you sure as hell should too. BRR!!!

@TheAlexChapman Interviews Keri Hilson (Video)

They don’t make them like Keri Hilson anymore. A Jane of all trades who started as a songwriter in her early teens, the 28 year-old hitmaker has written some of your favorite songs, and you may not even know it. But ever since her emergence as Timbaland’s partner in crime in songs like “Way I Are” and the HEAVILY underrated “Miscommunication,” (both off Timbo’s smash “Shock Value“) Ms. Keri has finally been getting the spotlight she deserves. I got a chance to sit down with the singer-songwriter—whose album No Boys Allowed is available in stores today and digitally tomorrow—and talk about her perfect man, her controversial new …

@TheAlexChapman’s Dancing (Teen) Queens of 2011 (Video & MP3)

Now I know that I’ve already given my loyal readers (reader….hi mom!) a dose of my predictions for 2011’s musical creme de la creme, but there is a specific genre’s future that I hold near and dear to my heart: Dance! The kind of euro-pop, vocal-heavy club music that was my guiltiest pleasure in high school, to be specific. But times have changed since my freshman gym class, and recently dance music has quickly fist-pumped its way into the mainstream: The MTV audience has grown extremely fond of DJ-Producers like Tiesto, David Guetta, Deadmau5, and even the most heavyweight of pop stars (Usher, …

@TheAlexChapman predicts 2011’s musical champions (Video & MP3)

This year has been quite a ride for music: Nicki Minaj mania upped wig sales everywhere, M.I.A.’s anti-Google crusade fell flat, and the annoyingly adorable 20-somethings of Glee took over America’s airwaves. Between all the accomplishments and pitfalls, an array of artists began to prove themselves as interesting and appealing digressions from the typical. And since my  theory is that 2011 will be the year of originality (..or something), I felt it was only appropriate to endow my readers (reader) with my personal picks for next year’s musical cream of the crop.
