Alex Chapman isn't any ordinary 19 year-old. While his colleagues had always seemed content with the standard life of a Chicago high schooler, Alex’s love for the arts had always driven him to desire much more. Having started in the music business at the early age of 16, Alex has already worked at such respected companies as The Windish Agency, Rolling Stone, and URB Magazine, to name a few. With an established passion for the music business entact, Alex began interviewing artists via URB two years ago, when he acted as their official correspondent for Lollapalooza. Talking with popular indie outfits like Chairlift, Friendly Fires and Lykke Li, Alex was quickly bitten by the interviewing bug. Now living in New York, the NYU freshman has taken his abilities to the next level, creating his own interviewing entity (with the help of branding geniuses @AtSuperfun) aptly entitled “The Real Alex Chapman”. In addition, Alex has very recently landed an editorial apprenticeship at the illustrious Paper Magazine, and continues to write for URB regularly. "I think the world of mainstream media is under the impression that they have to pre-package everything as simplistically as possible in order for the consumer to get it," says Alex, who is now based in the Greenwich Village area. "But the reality is that there are large groups of people, especially young people, who are smarter than that, and who really want to get to know these artists as musicians, and as human beings. I came to the quick realization that there was nobody out there really talking to these artists in a relatable way. Upon coming to that conclusion, I went straight to work.” Having already interviewed artists like Skrillex, Wiz Khalifa, Matt and Kim, Soulja Boy, Semi Precious Weapons, Keri Hilson and a host of others in a matter of 2.5 months, the project is already off to a strong start. And with an ever-improving production crew and a immense number of acts slated for interviews in 2011, it seems as though Alex Chapman is destined to be far more than just your average kid.

@FollowShala @MsSevenSpoon Project Shocks and Impresses

Based out of Chicago, Nigerian artist and musician Shala (formally of the innovative rap outfit Qualo, who you might remember from their underappreciated pseudo-hit “Pockets“) has long been known to URB, Chicagoans and fans alike as a jack-of-all-trades. His newest project— a satirical comic entitled “Seven Spoon“— follows an audacious, chic-beyond-her-years teen of the same name as she rants and raves about the current state of culture, society and the like.

Drawing comparisons to the bone-dry cynicism of Dilbert and Daria, Seven Spoon is the sharp-tongued voice of the new generation, a voice you’ll either instantly love or potentially hate. If it happens to be the former, you’re in luck—there are signature fitted tees, gallery prints, …

This song just screams summer nostalgia—check out the chillwave rap swag of Quannum Projects’ “Testimony”  below. The recently released track is the first single off Lateef The Truthspeaker’s (one piece of QP, along with Lyrics Born and DJ Shadow, among others) upcoming album FireWire, which will also feature Dan The Automater, Del The Funky Homosapien and more. The debut disc doesn’t hit stores until November, but at least we have “Testimony” to listen to while we lay poolside during these final days before fall.

If you’ve ever been a fan of the blue-eyed soul stylings of artists like Dusty Springield, Duffy and even the late/great Amy Winehouse, you’re likely to find appeal in 18 year-old Chicagoan Kirby Kaiser. A newcomer whose tunes just popped up on the blogosphere for the first time yesterday, Ms. Kaiser makes doo-wop-infused pop, for which the subject matter varies from friends with benefits to unrequited teen love, all with a croon implicit of girl groups like the Shangri-Las and the Shirelles. A whole lot of potential in this one—listen for yourself below, and click here to check out some of Kirby’s other demos via her Soundcloud.
