Kenan Bell Rocks the Big Easy

Part five of Kenan's tour diary

Feb 11, 2010
Day 7 Part 1
11:23 am

Mississippi is a trip. What a friendly, eclectic mix of people. Not as many White Dreds as the other stops on this tour, but definitely as much drug use.  It’s surprising how rampant this culture has become. Students are as bold as ever as they ask innocent bystanders for any narcotics they can acquire. One kid blatantly asked me, “Do you have drugs?” I quickly responded, “Nah, I don’t do drugs.” Homeboy, who was about half an inch taller than me, had the creepiest smile on his face when he simply replied, ”Well, I do.” His sinister grin kinda freaked me out, but I let him know that I hoped he found what he was looking for. Interactions like these with people across the globe give me a stronger sense of pride and gratitude for the way my parents raised me.  I’m thankful that I grew up in the melting pot that is Los Angeles, California and was exposed to such a diverse array of influences. My mother being from AL and my pops being from LA has allowed me to have deep roots in the South, as most African-Americans do, but the cultures that the West Coast exposed me to truly shaped my person.  s we left MS, headed for a post Super Bowl Parade/pre-Mardi Gras New Orleans, I wondered what insanity I would be exposed to on this leg of my expedition.

Hey Champ x The Cool Kids – ‘We (Are) Champions’

Indie group Hey Champ (previously signed under Lupe Fiasco’s label FNF) just leaked a brand new track from their upcoming remix project w/ dubFrequency. Taking the vocals from one of my personal favorites from Gone Fishing — “Champions” — Hey Champ mashes together a concoction of 80s pop and funk as background to match. Definitely an interesting sound to hear The Cool Kids on since we’re all so used to their signature yet minimal drum beats. Take a listen here and look out for the rest of the project soon (rumored appearances include Mike Posner, The Sounds, and others)…

Wolfgang Amadaeus Phoenix Remix Album (Stream)

Check out this collection of remixes from Phoenix’s latest album: Wolfgang Amadaeus Phoenix. There are some new tracks on it that didn’t make the LP so it’s worth checking out. The band also launched a video featuring 20 songs that changed their lives. They’re obviously in the giving mood today so you might as well capitalize on their generosity. First seen at Stereogum.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – ‘Heads Will Roll (A-Trak Remix)’ (mp3) (MP3)

A Trak is at it again with the remixes. It doesn’t sound like a completely different tune from the original but it definitely got a jolt for the club. First seen at Fool’s Gold.

Geoff Barrow Announces New Band, New Portishead Music.

Last year’s re-activation of Portishead seems to have really kicked the band’s sampling/electronics wizard into high gear. First, Barrow went to work producing the Horror’s second album, the brilliant Primary Colours. Now, he’s released an album by his new band, Beak, and has revealed that Portishead is back in the studio working on new music, which he described as possibly being a “multi-layered synthesizer record.’ A relief for all the fans who waited 11 years for the band’s last album, 2008’s Third.
