Austin is rowdy, y’all.
Hoards of hipsters and freaks mob 6th Street and all adjoining arteries. 20 closed off blocks of street bands, kissing booths, food carts and side shows set the scene for the tens of thousands. I’m shocked at the amount of quality you get on the street alone, from the food to the french horned Amish lookin’ crazies, everyone is good at something. I feel like Anthony Bourdain with these street carts right now.
In this last segment, Ari 40oz Gold tries to create some controversy (to no avail) when he asks Ruste about Sean Price’s intentions in his recent track, Figure Four. Ruste then goes on to talk about Sean P’s upcoming project with Black Milk and how he plans to be a featured artist on one of their songs. You can watch Part 1 and Part 2 here.

Returning for their second SXSW tour-de-force, Bogota’s Bomba Estereo unleashed a frenzy at Levi’s Fader Fort yesterday evening. It still surprised me that Liliana Saumet never dreamed of becoming a musician and yet, here she is. Her hybrid singing and rapping style is more polished since last seeing her perform; however, her raw energy is formidable and contagious. Perhaps more surprising was drummer Kike Egurrola, who had his moment to shine and delivered unstoppable beat after beat. It must have been the setting which allowed everyone’s personality and skills to fully unfurl before the audience. Julian Salazar on the guitar tore it up and certainly the mastermind behind it all, Simon Mejia, was in fine form alternating between his bass, computer, and keys. We’ll admit, it’s kinda a slow news Friday for those who aren’t running around Austin for SXSW. Fortunately, we’re just getting around to watching this clips of The xx performing “Islands” on Jimmy Fallon. Watching this band live is really a lesson on drum pad-subtlety (not something you usually get when folks are rocking the MPC). We’re also reminded that we never had a Shamrock shake this year. Anyone know if McDonalds is still serving?

In two words: mind-blowing. After a formidable performance from Eskmo, who also showed off his sick silver high-tops and fancy footwork, gaining an inch of space closer to the stage before FlyingLo’s set was akin to signing a death warrant. With an all-new visual presentation and the upcoming release of Cosmogramma, there were many things that could have left the salivating crowd disappointed. FlyingLo mentioned that he wasn’t sure how Austin was going to react to his tunes since they don’t easily fit the mold of what’s expected for SX performing artists. This was something far beyond normal; it was phenomenal. With his hands in the air like a conductor summoning the bleeps and blurps from his decks, FlyingLo exuded confidence—and absolute joy.
