Rusko – Da Cali Anthem (MP3)

The new unofficial west coast anthem from Rusko features a sample of Roger Troutman’s talkbox from 2Pac’s “California Love.” Rusko is set to release his debut album O.M.G.! in May on Mad Decent/Downtown Records. This particular cut will not be featured on the album, however you can check the video for the first single “Woo Boost” after the jump. Also, if you’re in Austin for SXSW, you might be able to catch his performance sometime today at Mad Decent’s Carniville. The event is being held at the Mexican American Cultural Center, 600 River St.

The Black Keys – “Tighten Up” (Produced by Danger Mouse) (MP3)

Time was, that the Black Keys were just another bearded hipster retro-rock band. Then, the partnered with Danger Mouse on 2008’s Attack & Release album and became an exceptional bearded hipster retro-rock band. Then they teamed up with Dame Dash for last year’s hip-hop saturated Blackroc and became the world’s most over-hyped bearded hipster retro-rock band. Now the duo of Dan Auerbah and Patrick Carney have announced their eighth album, Brothers, on the BBC by playing a new song, again produced by Danger Mouse. File this one under “If it ain’t broke…” because it might sound familiar, but also really darn good.

Cubic Zirconia Tour: SXSW Day 2 (Video)

Austin is rowdy, y’all.

Hoards of hipsters and freaks mob 6th Street and all adjoining arteries. 20 closed off blocks of street bands, kissing booths, food carts and side shows set the scene for the tens of thousands. I’m shocked at the amount of quality you get on the street alone, from the food to the french horned Amish lookin’ crazies, everyone is good at something. I feel like Anthony Bourdain with these street carts right now.

DJ Jazzy Jeff & Ayah – This Way Album Sampler (MP3)

I had the privilege of chatting with Ayah some time ago and she dropped some hints about her upcoming album with DJ Jazzy Jeff. My interest piqued when I heard about this project since Jeff is an accomplished producer and his soulful style matches Ayah’s voice very well. The final release date is still TBA. In the meantime this collection of freebies ought to hold fans over until more news on the LP comes our way.

Cubic Zirconia Tour: SXSW Day 1 (Video)

Cubic Zirconia hit the Karmaloop stage at Beauty Bar under the back yard tent in the high sun. A couple hundred people filed in the space, managers, DJs, bands and friends from New York and LA sparsed through the crowd with a curious familiarity. They hit with energy, the set was fluid, calculated, and most importantly fun as could be. Sean Carasso of Falling Whistles asked me “can they keep this up for 6 days?” and I told him “they’ve already done six days.” It was a rabbit out of the hat, yet there’s always logic and the prestige with magic.
