Bilal brought his new album A Love Surreal to S.O.B.‘s last night in New York City. Starting off with the new “West Side Girl”, and blended it into familiar territory with “Love it” & “Reminisce” among others. His voice during concerts is nothing short of a force of nature, as his songs become sketches in a free form canvas akin to Jackson Pollock. I’ve seen him dozens of times, and can say this is the most relaxed I’ve seen him with a backing band performing original recordings. As throngs of young people descended back to the city from the Governor’s Ball festival covered in mud, I kicked my feet up and enjoyed an elegant dinner in the company of his diverse fan base. If you haven’t checked out his latest, release considered yourself formally informed of its appeal both in studio and stage form.
