The ever-growing Planet Mu footwork contingency has spread to the younger generations of Chicago, with the wunderkind producer Young Smoke at the helm. Drawing influences from places and sound not seen or heard regularly, you’d think you’d stumbled upon the moon landing with a footwork battleground at the base of it. With his debut LP Space Zone providing a deluge of sweeping synths, torrential rhythms and extraterrestrial excellence, Young Smoke spoke briefly with URB about how things are going since he’s signed with Planet Mu, what he’s accomplished in this past year and what we should look forward to from him in the near future. Along with that, URB has secured the exclusive video to “Space Muzik Pt. 2″. Check out the video and interview after the jump.
URB: Tell us about how you got into making music in the first place.
YOUNG SMOKE: I always liked music, was always drawn to it; but I started fooling around with making it when I was like 11 or 12 years old, but then I start getting my own equipment and started making music for real.
URB: What do you think differentiates you from the local footwork producers in Chicago, as well as other footwork producers on your home on Planet Mu?
YS: My style is more unique; different sounds that come from out of nowhere. Most people don’t use the sounds that I use or convey the style of music I make, so that what makes me different from the rest.
URB: What’s a day in the life of Young Smoke? How have things changed since you’ve gained steam with the release?
YS: Things have changed a bit for me cause now I have to stay focused on my music more, but it’s been good knowing that I have a album out on Planet Mu, it means I’ve accomplished something important this year.
URB: What’s your studio set-up at the moment? Any favorite gear?
YS: I don’t really have any “favorite” piece of gear. I just use a computer and an MPC, that’s it.
URB: What’s your DJ set like nowadays?
YS: My last live set was at The War Zone by Walacam. I spin there a lot and rock the circle everytime; the footworkers knows what’s about to happen when I get on the 1’s and 2’s.
URB: What do you hope people will find when they hear your album on Planet Mu?
YS: They will find their self-drifting outer space into another dimension.
URB: What’s the future looking like for Young Smoke?
YS: The future is looking good.. I have a lot of underground releases as well as looking forward to Space Zone V.2, so just be on the look out.
