Coachella Is Leaving Indio, Taking Off 2014 (Update)

UPDATE 2: Goldenvoice has contacted us to inform us that the comment left claiming factual errors and attributed to Paul T of Goldenvoice was not actually Paul T. Real funny guys.

UPDATE: Paul T from Goldenvoice has claimed a few of the facts reported in this article are incorrect. For that reason, we have taken it down while waiting for an official statement from GV.

Coachella announced today the 2013 will be the last year that the 15 year old festival will take place in Indio, CA, it’s home since the first Coachella in 1999. That means 2013 will be the last year for fans to gather on the legendary Empire Polo Grounds to experience America’s premier music and art festival.

The move comes after Indio City Councilman Sam Torres began leading a petition drive to add an $18/ticket tax on each ticket sold starting in 2014. And while the the proposed increase has not yet made it onto the November ballot, Coachella organizers Goldenvoice have decided to call the Councilman’s bluff, announcing the move to a new location, presumably still in the Coachella Valley.

Goldenvoice CEO Paul Tollett told the Desert Sun Times that Goldenvoice and polo club owner Alex Haagen III plan to skip Coachella 2014 and use the time to build a new venue for the festival to resume in 2015.

“If the tax initiative of putting $4million to $6 million onto Coachella gets on the ballot,” said Tollett, “we’re going to take off 2014; 2015 we’ll be at a new facility outside of Indio.”

In a text to Torres, Goldenvoice VP Skip Paige put a period on the statement, writing, “You know were moving right? All this is a game. Why in the world would we stay where we are not wanted. LQ doesn’t want us, Indio wants to take all our profits. Its a joke.

This final brinksmanship comes after several years of disputes between the City of Indio and Coachella over environmental concerns and delayed permits. The annual event bring in an estimated $800,000 in ticket fees, tax revenue on about $9 million in food and beverages sold, and a Transient Occupancy Tax of more than $800,000 according to Goldenvoice.

So if you were thinking that 2013 might be a good year to take a break from Coachella, think again.
