Red Bull Thre3style – Heat 2 Highlights (Video)

The second day of the Red Bull Thre3style competition saw four more international DJ’s take the stage in the hopes of qualifying for the world finals.

DJ Bitcode representing for Spain took to the stage first, in the hopes of leaving his impression on the crowd and ultimately the judges.  With a few surprising turns (Blondie) and party favorites, the message to the remaining DJ’s was sent in his electronically influenced set.

Second to the stage, Robert Moreno from Argentina, came in with what can only be described as a masterful selection of party lines that helped to not only relay his own flavor but helped to ease the crowd into the energy of his set that took off with the the words ‘Free Your Mind” lifted from En Vogue and later moving from an AC/DC cutup to a classical break the he would use to show off his technical prowess.  His later drop in of the Ramones classic, ‘I Wanna Be Sedated’ helped to drive the crowd even further.

Third on the deck was Vancouver’s favorite son, DJ Hedspin.  Opening his set with a stand-up routine set that segued into a Rock Around the Clock routine, he pushed the crowd past a frenzy delivering a set that would definitely have left an impression regardless of his status as the hometown hero.  A few personal highlights include his genre defying transition from Kanye’s ‘Dark Fantasy’ into a remix of Dee-Lite’s ‘Groove is in the Heart as well as a few Manny Pacquiao drops.

The final Day 2 participant was DJ Dippy, hailing from India.  Of the four DJ’s the crowd was left in a heap of international flavor.  Transitioning between party anthems, he was able to make a showing using Bhangra’s cut-ups and samples throughout his set — letting people know just where he was from and what his skill-set as a DJ would show.

Ultimately, the night and the floor belonged to the hometown favorite, DJ Hedspin.  Advancing past one of my favorite DJ’s Drastik, he’s definitely on his way to becoming an international name on his own.
