You didn’t think LCD Soundsystem’s final show at Madison Square Garden would fade into memory quickly, did you? Directors Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace will be premiering a film about the concert at Sundance next year, described as, “A documentary that follows LCD Soundsystem front man James Murphy over a crucial 48-hour period, from the day of their final gig at Madison Square Garden to the morning after, the official end of one of the best live bands in the world.”
Anyone who has spent time with Murphy (or read any of his self-aware and insightful interviews over the years) knows that the LCD mastermind is as interesting offstage as he is behind the mic, so we can only wonder what sort of gems will be revealed in the film, titled SHUT UP AND PLAY THE HITS. The name comes from a quote by Arcade Fire’s Win Butler, uttered on the mic when he joined LCD onstage to sing backup on “North American Scum” during the final show.
You can kinda hear Butler’s quote in this audience clip. Shame the high-quality webcast footage of the evening has been wiped from the internet.
