Ango: Deep Inside “Another City Now” (Video)

Ango Coat

Ango is LuckyMe’s newest artist and his new EP, Another City Now, is currently available for audible consumption as you’re currently reading this. However, this isn’t your typical LuckyMe dancefloor burner release; Another City Now is a debut that focuses on the emotional weight of each track, oozing with inspiration and light at every turn. Full of nods to ’80s boogie, funk, RnB, as well as Ango’s strong vocal stamp, this debut release from the Canadian producer is sure to pluck at the heartstrings and bring out the funk hidden inside each and every one of us. Ango was more than kind enough to give URB a take on his inspiration for the record, with an in-depth personal take on each track, along with links to some vibes that put him onto the right path to each tune. Check it out after the jump.

“Another City Now” is a travelogue.  It’s six songs, each referencing very specific people, places and sounds that have all been filtered through my own 1984-born palette.  I’ve spent the last couple years romanticizing the idea of Prince sitting at a Prophet 5 (or Oberheim, etc) and a LinnDrum (or Drumtraks, etc) with his guitar in hand, creating the template for Pop, R&B, funk and electronic music for the years to come.  ”When Doves Cry” was #1 the day I was born.

1: ALL YOU CAN STAND (intro)

I was opening sets with this edit I made of “No Matter” by Lowell. At some point on the road, I was reminiscing with our host/MC and the tour manager about the classic Chicago Bulls entrance music (Alan Parsons Project – Sirius http://youtu.be/ejhfP-O_OsU) and as an inside joke, opened the rest of the tour with it.  With “All You Can Stand” I was evoking the spirit of both these tracks.

2: FOLLOW ME:

My first time setting foot on continental Europe was March 2010 in Rome.  I was staying with a brilliant Boogie producer named AD Bourke (http://soundcloud.com/adbourke) whom I met at the Red Bull Music Academy.  It wasn’t the first time I heard it, but listening to “You’re The One For Me” in Ad’s car while taking in all the monuments/climate/culture of Italy really inspired the mood I tried to re-create on this one.
