The Away Team, Scars & Stripes (Review)

The Away Team

Scars & Stripes

Released by IWWMG/Jamla/Duckdown

North Carolina might have saved hip-hop for a year or two (too bad that was circa 2003 or 2005 depending on your entry point). Khrysis is one of the best producers of the Fruity Loops era. That compressed sound was made for the digital generation and is still easy on the ear when done right. 9th Wonder & Khrysis are descendants of the Native Tongues, that was clear from the outset, why else would the marquee group of their movement be called Little Brother. But the cast on the fractured in-between has to be Da Beatminerz’ crackling sound which kept the Boot Camp Clik on the borderline of backpack and blackjack; an export that worked exceedingly well with the Hall Of Justus massive’s burgeoning endeavors.

It’s unfortunate that vocals occasionally get in the way these days. Sean Boog may be a serviceable MC, but his capabilities are clearly limited. Critics have bashed better for the same shit (Guru and Evidence, to name a couple) but if Khrysis draws comparisons to Premier, it has to be said Boog is his Lil’ Dap counterpart. This is not a true slight, it just means Boog was lucky to find a talented producer who remains loyal to him. Top-notch producers often underwhelm on the mic and Khrysis certainly proves that adage.

The title track is reminiscent of a ‘94 era composition (The Artficats’ “Wrong Side Of The Tracks” comes to mind). “What Is This” featuring Evidence and “Paid” featuring Laws can draw you in but the best offerings are “Get Down” with GQ and “Drift.” “I Ain’t Mad” is the only truly regrettable song here, why it made the cut is one only the Hip-Hop Oracle can answer.

2005-2006 was the Golden Era of Fruity Loops, it was a new toy that quickly gave way to denigrations like 9th Onedrum, a shame, since this album brings back that fresh feel (proof positive). Nowadays positive adjectives seem to get lost. Let’s just say there are some meaningful moments here, be thankful whenever those come about.
