More than two decades after the Freestyle Fellowship’s classic ‘93 album Innercity Griots, Fellowship member Myka 9 continues to churn out records. In fact, last week saw the release of his own LP, Mykology and a new Freestyle Fellowship record, Promise. But these days he’s got more than recording music on deck. He started a label, M9 Entertainment, with friend and producer JtheSarge.

These days they’re readying a hip-hop rasta rapper from Oakland (by way of Suriname) named Winstrong. His debut album featuring Aceyalone, M1 from dead prez, and others, called Ghetto Hymns, will be available October 25. They’re also readying for their trip to Amsterdam next month, where they will perform at Cannabis Cup 2011. Below, veteran rapper Myka 9 speaks to Winstrong about music, politics, and, well of course…ganga!

MYKA 9: Why the name Winstrong?

Win: Winstrong because it was given to me by Reggae legends Frankie Paul, Edi Fitzroy and Rankin Scroo. Plus the fact that it has two definitions Win and Strong (winning and being strong), a moto for all strugglers.

MYKA 9: How does your upbringing from Suriname affect your music?

Win: My upbringing partly effects my writing because of what I’ve learned and seen growing up as an boy in the Third world. Plenty has happened in between that which has given me the urge to express the things Ive learned. Now I feel the need to share with the world. Growing up there in Suriname definitely affected my writing and way I express my self….Third-world style!

MYKA 9: How much of a message is in your music?

Win: There is an important message in all my music. It’s sociological commentary, like a ghetto CNN with a message against evil or Babylon and teachings of his majesty…righteousness and love teachin…love one another.

MYKA 9: How would you describe the socio-political climate in America now?

Win: The sociopolitical climate is the same it was 15 years ago, just a new face as leadership. Sad.

MYKA 9: Describe an ideal setting to hear your tunes.

Win: I am picturing a stadium in Europe… with the thousands!

Myka 9: What is your herb of choice these days… ha ha then food?

Win: Ha Ha! My choice is Sour Diesel, Gran Daddy Purple and Hash Plant… and after all of that…a nice refreshing drink!
