A3C was a weekend filled with reunions, representing, and rapping. Crews rapping acts like Jon Connor with their “ya knooooow!” chants and acts like the LEP Bogus Boys from Chicago with their crazy showcase at Fadia Kader’s Perfect Attendance Stage.
If you weren’t there to rock the mic, you may have been in attendance just checking out some dope music. Moving through the crowd handling biz like SMKA or just chilling like Kyle Lucas of Vonnegutt. Artists flew from all over the country to make noise and shake hands. Acts like Prime Element did the same as MC Pig Pen and Pat Maine last year by driving from Colorado to make it happen for themselves in the sake of hip hop. Out of 200 plus performances, many of them being only ten minutes long, here’s the list of acts that made a little noise, a lotta noise, and so much noise we might say “shut the F#$K UP you are making mad noise, ” noise. We didn’t actually catch everyone here, but we sure as hell saw everyone atleast 5 times in the Masquerade, diner, or Days Inn, aka rapper headquarters.
1. Action Bronson:
This guy not only rocked the perfect attendance stage but also rocked the Big Daddy Kane night. He was a big target for video crews and interviews, probably because he is played by almost every SHADE 45 dj on a daily basis. He is epic. I think he’ll be on TV sooner than later. THen i again I don’t watch that much TV but this is more of a reason to. Follow Action Bronson on twitter
2. Donny Goines
A man who conquered NY blogs and walked up into every major publication office to get his own interviews relocated to the ATL and managed to get on every major showcase there like the hustler he is. He was doing just that – hustling. He also lost about 40 pounds and we heard he is about to drop a record with about every major producer and artist that exists. All we need to see him do is take his A3C hustle on the road for a forty city tour. Follow Donny Goines on twitter.
3.BIg Daddy Kane
I don’t really think he needs to be seen as making noise – he is a legend, his presence makes noise. An act with such classic nature can take the last stage of the last night in “Heaven” and do a split – no questions asked, no injuries sustained. If we tried doing splits…we would end up in the hospital. There is no link for Big Daddy Kane. You shoudl look him up in the dictionairy of dopeness. But watch him warm it up.
4. ASAP Rocky
Purple swag might be the best song because what other color is better with swag than purple. (just think…pink..no. blue…no…green..no….purple..yes) He came land a deal supposed in the 7 figure area with RCA and polo Grounds. Swag. Unfortunately he didn’t make it becuase he is heading on tour with kendrick lamar and ….drake. #damnhedidn’tshowswag Follow ASAP ROCKY on twitter.
5. Freeway
Not only did the 1-900 Hustler come out to rock A3C crazily with his classics, but he was also featured with Kosha Dillz on the cover story of Creative Loafing and was featured on a airplane magazine on Air Tran that not many people know about. How cool is it to be in a airplane magazine? Although he has sold over half a million records with the Roc, his #teamearly movement is something fresher than ever. Overtime most hip hop people go to bed, but Freeway is up hustling it. Follow @phillyfreezer on twitter
6. G- Eazy
This dude tours with Lil Wayne and Drake. He looks like James Dean. He sings and he is on hipster blogs and more. His show is fresh and he pumps out mixtures like no other. At A3C was surprising to see him on a bill with Murs and Tabi Bonney but I think it was an awesome look for him and he just signed with Agency Group to book, so we might see some even bigger things from him. Pigeons and Planes presented his mix with DJ booth. Follow G-Eazy on twitter and his superfan tumblr
7. Kosha Dillz
After winning 1st place in the HipHopDX competition for a headlining support spot – Dillz was flown from LA and paid the metaphorical “big bucks” to play their stage. Creative Loafing Atlanta put two pictures of Dillz in 50,000 news papers in Atlanta, including an article on Muslim and Jewish relations with Freeway He was featured in MTV’s Rap Fix for A3C and, post festival, has played five shows with Yo Gabba Gabba live tour and released his music video for Sweatpants Song – which has already been praised by Consequence of Sound, DA Wallach and SUPERGOODMUSIC.com. He has a gang of CMJ shows this week.
8. Murs w/ Tabi bonney
The Hip Hop and Love Tour is something that Murs is on across the USA, and the seasoned performer is crushing it forever with projects that never seem to end. I’m hoping that he continues to be the hero to underground hip hop. For him to be at A3C was special for anyone who was looking for real fans to be here. Be aware that this guy having a major label deal in 2008 was the big moment for independent hip hop. Not only does he have nearly 200,000 loyal fans on facebook (murs) but He just did Yo Gabba Gabba at the Beacon theatre in NYC and nearly sold out the Music Hall of Williamsburg. Follow @murs and @tabibonney
9. SkyZoo and Illmind
Skyzoo not only is one of the illest lyricists, but his production team with Illmind is obviously uplifting. With one of the most successful debuts via The Salvation, this ultra lyricist played on multiple showcases and also was seen doing mad work on the unique mobile tour bus with Illmind. I tout them together as a team. Illmind has placement on every rapper you can ever imagine. The coolest thing is he still works with people on the come up and is aware of talent. @therealskyzoo and @illmindproducer on twitter
10. Jon Connor
A huge crew of guys scream “YOU KNOOOOOW!” and all rocking Jon Connor tee shirts. He rolls deep. Enough said. This guy had special guests Saigon and Pill to come rep with him. He is the next dude to blow. His bars are relentless. Nas even speaks about him so I hear. Holy shit Jon Connor. You give Arnold Schwarzenegger a great name if he ever went back to his acting life and became a rapper. Follow
11. Moke and Tone
Hailing from Massachusetts, these guys didn’t rock in front of the most people for the Kevin Nottingham, but they did rock in front of the right people. Usually Massachusetts gets represented by act like Termanology and Statik, but these guys also had Jason Voorheez with them from the Problemaddicts, who have been tearing up the Northeast for a while, including the festival circuit. Moke and Tone repped early on kenvin nottingham but it was great to see them get fly on the allhiphop.com stage when the crowd gave them a spare moment Watch out for these guys and Follow Moke and Tone on twitter. (@mokeandtone)
12. J Live
J Live is not underrated, this guy is legendary. He can run jump hop skip and draw a crowd. With his new album out, its time to stop reading this article; its time to look on line and buy it. follow him on twitter (@J_Live3tp ) When you get a chance to see him live. DO it. He really conquered a3c on the outdoor stage and a huge amount of peeps there.
13. League of Extraordinary G’s
They were on a amazing bill for DJ Booth and their presence is that of 3 rap groups. Despite that, what struck me most is their tee shirt. Not only is their tee shirt so fucking awesome, but it can be worn by the entire span of American ghettos just because of how street and hip hop it is. I literally met them in an elevator and saw their shirts and decided that they must be serious. Unfortunately since then, Esbe, The 6th st. bully had passed away. I found some links and great info on The FIxx that showcases the crews work. Follow them at @Loegz
14a One be Lo and 14.b Eternia
I don’t really know why I am putting these two together. Its just like its coming to me this way you know? Eternia has been crushing it with her Canadian flows and rocked the awesome Fiona Bloom showcase that brough internationals like the Reminders and more to the stage. Her flow is beastly. One be Lo not only rocked crazy but he seems to have more pep in his step as of recent. he will be on tour with DJ ABilities soon and is proof that Michigan rocks the truth. Follow @therealeternia
and @onebelo on twitter.
15a Senor Kaos and 15b. HomeBoySandman
Senor Kaos came through with Ultra Beast. Why not be an ultra beast? He is one for sure with 4-ize. He is more a beast for landing an appearance on Steve Stout’e's spot on CNN for how hip hop is taking over marketing. Follow @senorkaos and catch him as he hits CMJ as well. the #ultrabeast is working.
HomeBoy Sandman dominated the HiphopDX showcase and played favorites like this is “Not Pop”, which took the crowd by storm and proved why he is Stones Throw newest discovery that has been NY bred for a long time. Beofre the storm hits, make sure you run for cover from Lightning bolts.
16. Percee P
This guy has a flow that cannot be matched. You might question why he is always at every place selling his CD’s but when you see amazing DJs like Evil Dee witnessing the awesome show he puts on in front of 50 kids from Atlanta, you see why his album was produced entirely by Madlib and on Stones Throw. Percee P is a legendary MC that has awesome tracks to push for the people. His sound and agility are great and he still connects with the crowd every moment he can, with cd’s in hand or not. Follow him on twitter @therealperceep
HONORABLE MENTIONS that are more than HONORABLE:
So, really thats like 18. acts. Of course you must be like, how can you not talk about Freddie Gibbs or Soul Khan or Termanology or MOP and Dead Prez? Well that can happen but this article would be way too long.
What about Statik Selektah and his new project coming out? Needs its own article.
We have Elzhi and hot newcomers like WIll Brennan that blew people away when his rapid fast rhymes let loose to capitvate the ATL crowd. Big KRIT doesn’t need the introduction here. We know they are all dope pedigree. But these above named artists are the dope ones we are talking about this time and we expect to see them all A SXSW with maybe some cool type of A3C reunion? Its all good. Hip Hop Lives on. CMJ is now. SXSW is only in 6 months. New albums, mixtapes, single and videos are coming out from everyone of the artists mentioned in this article. We wish we could add this all but I hope this list makes you more than happy .
Until next A3c 2012!
