interstella Daft Punk Release Interstella 5555 On Blu Ray

Before there was the pyramid, the art films and TRON:Legacy, Daft Punk broke the electronic music mold with Interstella 5555, and anime film created in conjunction with the duo’s smash second album, Discovery. The film animates the whole of the album, which included Daft Punk classics “One More Time,” “Face To Face” and “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger,” while telling the story of an alien band who are kidnapped by an evil music industry executive and forced to perform as human likenesses. The film was created with legendary anime auteur Leiji Matsumoto, who introduced an entire generation of Western youths, including Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, to the Japanese sci-fi style with his show Space Battleship Yamato (ie- Star Blazers).

EMI released Interstella 5555 for the first time on Blu-Ray on October 4th, with a variety of new extras, most based around storyboards from the original production. And while the visual difference between DVD and Blu-Ray is often lost in animation, it’s still a stellar chance to pick up this charming, and often forgotten, piece of Daft Punk’s discography.
