Emcee Mikey Mo has set up shop long enough in the Bay Area –via Jamaica Queens, NY–to call San Francisco his home. His second album Rule By Decree, is coming out in October on 3sixty5 Records. Mikey is free-spirited and enjoys a good laugh, so it’s no surprise that one of the first crews he hooked up with (in addition to Hiero) was Living Legends.
“Me and Sunspot (Jonz), we just think alike, our minds are wired the same,” Mikey laughs, understanding that he is likening himself to the to the wildest Legend of them all. In the meantime, Sunspot continues to make music and enjoy life. He released his own Galaxy of Dreams album, and a side project, The Temper Twins, this Spring. Today, he’s working on a new album, Future Yesterday. But in the meantime we got the old underground rap vet together with the newbie to see what would happen.
Sunspot: I drank some red Cisco like we usually do at your studio and peeped ya new video that Casual from Hiero shot. “Freedom Ain’t free,” I loved it! My question is, why did the guy take the money and give you his wallet. LOL! Also— if freedom ain’t free then–what is free then?
Mikey Mo: I dont know why you torture me with that Cisco!! Thanks for the love my G!! The agent took my wallet and money actually and gave it back to me. Making me pay for my freedom. Nothing is free, everything has a price one way or another.
Sunspot: If you could bum rush any MC while he’s performing on stage, who would it be? And why?
Mikey Mo: I would definitely bum rush Mos Def and soda can him…. cause he dissed my lil brother at Rock The Bells a couple years ago. That shit still got me heated. My lil brother was showing him love and he just blew him off. I couldn’t believe it.
Sunspot: Who is your musical inspiration? And please don’t say Tupac like everybody and they mama love to shout out.
Mikey Mo: Aww man!! This is a tough one….Im from Jamaican Queens so I would say: ATCQ, Nas, LL Cool J, Lost Boyz, Big Pun, Mobb Deep, CNN, Biggie, De La soul, 50 cent, Busta Rhymes,Wu Tang, The Roots, UGK, E-40, Devin the Dude, Snoop Dogg, Dog Pound, Outkast, Brotha Lynch Hung, Run DMC, DMX, Living Legends, Hiero, Common, Andre Nicatina, AZ, Equipto, EPMD, Redman…the list goes on!!!
Sunspot: If you could have any female in your next video, who would it be? And why?
Mikey Mo: I would have Halle Berry in my video just so I can see if she is really that amazing in real life. Or Nicki Minaj cause she from Queens and that donkey is the truth!!
Sunspot: Why did you cut the afro off and is Jim the Cleaner gonna follow suite and do the same by getting a fade? Afro=political/black panthers
Mikey Mo: I cut the fro cause I woke up late for work and I didnt want to go to work with a lop sidded fro. My hair grows quick so I might grow another one soon. I think The Cleaner is about to get some Carmelo Anthony cornrows!!
Sunspot: Why did you name your album Rule by Decree? Is that about our central government system in the U.S. being dictators or are you saying you’re taking back the nation one person at a time–sorta like how you did in the “Freedom Ain’t Free” video when you got supporters one by one holding up signs.
Mikey Mo: Exactly my G! We taking it back one person at a time!!! That and I was looking up stuff about Venezuela cause the producer that did all the beats is from there, and that’s how there government is run. It sounded dope to me so I went with it.
Sunspot: If you were Mayor and could change anything in the Ba,y what would you change besides your rims?
Mikey Mo: I would give everyone with a cannabis card a 200 plant limit and reduced electricity rates so we can keep the kush rollin and the profits high!!!
