In the pantheon of outrageous house DJs from Chicago, few are as incorrigible (or esteemable we must add) as Derrick Carter. The jock has contributed a new mix to UK fashion retail store Oki-Ni, which has also offered selection from Simian Mobile Disco, Dam-Funk and Marcel Dettman. In each case, the DJs offer something a little different from their usual peak-time nightclub endeavors.
For Carter’s mix, the Chicago native has chosen to pay homage to infamous Chicago radio station WBMX, whose Hot Lunch Mix program aired the latest from the city’s house music pioneers throughout the ’80s, and inspired the next generation of producers and DJs. Carter counts himself as one of those disciples, and his mix, THEHOTLUNCH, recalls the spirit of house music’s salad days, while avoiding an overly retro feel. Just what a top DJ should deliver for lunch.
