Ulrich Troyer’s Favorite Stompboxes & Effects Units + EXCLUSIVE Track (MP3)

william troyer

Things are always rooted in peculiarity when it comes to Ulrich Troyer, the Innsbruck-born, Austrian-raised producer/composer/artist. Whether its performing his own music or as a part of The Vegetable Orchestra, Ulrich does things in the most original way imaginable. His latest LP, Songs For William on Mala’s Deep Medi Musik imprint, is part one of a trilogy of experimental dub projects between Troyer and the label, accompanied by a comic book with each release (featuring William, the guitar pedal protagonist). To commemorate the release and comic book, we chatted with Ulrich about some of his favorite pieces of kit, along with the inspiration for some of his characters in his comic book. Also included is an exclusive cut from the LP for download. Check it all out after the jump.

5 STOMPBOXES & EFFECT UNITS (MODEL / FUNCTION / MANUFACTURER / ORIGIN)

1. BIG MUFF, Electro-Harmonix, Russia

Classic fuzz pedal. It was the inspiration for Muff, one of William’s closest friends always giving him great advices. I also have the US-made Big Muff Pi Tone Wrecker pedal which I use more often but the russian version with the chickenhead knobs was much more fun to draw.

2. Digital Delay Sampler DFX94 (Delay & Loop Sampler), DOD, USA

A great low-quality digital-delay-sampler where you can create crazy sound-layers and pitch them down or up and layer them with other sounds you record on the fly. Very lo-fi sounding. If you unplug it all the sounds are gone. This was the model for the comic character Herb.

3. DELUXE MEMORY MAN (Analog Delay), Electro-Harmonix, USA

This was the inspiration for Memory Man, the comic-character with memory gaps; a delay pedal with an amnesia problem? Probably the worst thing for an effect unit like this. I use it for noisy delays and drones.

4. THE RESONATOR (MS-20 Filter Clone), Frostwave, Australia

This was the inspiration for Charlotte, William’s girlfriend in the comic novel. Great self-oscillating high/low pass filter with six solid knobs, which are a great pleasure to twiddle with.

5. Maestro MP-1 (Phaser), Norlin Music, USA

This pedal was the inspiration for the character Fritz in the comic. In 1993 the father of the girlfriend of my old friend Paulus Rainer (we had a band 18 years ago together with my brother Kassian) was lending this guitar pedal to me with the words: “You can borrow it as long as you need it.” I didn’t give it back yet because I still need it.
