The country might be experiencing the last heated days of summer, but you can’t miss the sun set inching earlier with each passing day. Autumn is here, which means more time to spend inside with our beloved record collections. Here’s a few of our favorite tunes that smolder with an orange-tinted melancholy, just like the season.
Coldcut – “Autumn Leaves (Irresistable Force mix)”
The radio version saw the Ninja Tune bosses confidently tackling 1945’s ‘Les Feuilles Mortes’ (”The Dead Leaves”) by poet Jacques Prevert and musician Joseph Kosma. Already covered by artists including Nat Kind Cole, Eva Cassidy and Sarah Vaughan, Coldcut’s version then took an unexpected detour with ‘Autumn Leaves’ reproduced as an epic ambient soundscape by Mixmaster Morris. Breaking waves and haunting, often burbling synths are still cut through with occasional orchestral flourishes but its the use of just a few drawn-out distant vocals that really tug at the heart.
