Aphex Twin and Radiohead are popular acts that break all the rules of what it takes to be popular. So it’s easy to draw parallels between Richard D. James and Johnny Greenwood,as the ’90s sonic auteurs who have proven to be surpriusingly accessible to audiences—despite their clearly dissonant instincts.
Those instincts were on full display this weekend as Greenwoods and James performed at the European Cuture Congress with famed avante-guarde classical composer Krzysztof Penderecki. Sadly, the three did not meet together on stage, with Greenwood partnering Penderecki the first night, and James joining the orchestra on the second. But the results of each collaboration are quite stunning, as is the video of lasers shooting over the classical music-loving audience.
