Moog Sound Lab gives artists the opportunity to re-imagine one of their songs on all Moog instruments, creatively engineered and filmed at Moog Music’s factory in Asheville, North Carolina.  With Moog being the original arbiter of analog sound, it was a natural progression for them to create Moog Sound Lab. MSL gives another way of looking at music by newer artists; a look at what is next.

Moog Music established their legacy industrywide as being the pioneer of analog sound.  Beautifully combining Moog Music’s tight-knit company of innovators, with artists whose music is embellished by Moog’s product, Moog Sound Lab is positioned to break the next wave of groundbreaking new acts.

Phantogram’s “16 Years” is Moog Sound Lab’s most recent session. The band created a new landscape for a currently unreleased song, offering a fantastical, dreamy, analog trip.

Vocalist/keyboardist Sarah Barthel sings hauntingly through an MF-104Z Analog Delay while playing not one, but two Moog synthesizers.  Her left hand is in charge of the Minimoog Voyager Select Series providing big fat bass lines; the Little Phatty Stage II is arpeggiating in latch mode throughout the entire song. It is also being MIDI synced with percussionist Tim Oakley’s drum machine.  In addition to the drum machine, Tim uses the Minimoog Voyager XL for a percussive sound.

Meanwhile, guitarist/vocalist Josh Carter covers both the full sustain and the mute modes of the Moog Guitar. Going through an MF-104Z Analog Delay and the MF-102 Ring Modulator, Josh creates an ethereal backdrop with the tremolo arm of the Moog Guitar.

Phantogram will be on tour this autumn in support of their Barsuk Records debut, Eyelid Movies.
