When it comes to curmudgeons in the music industry, few can equal Steve Albini, the legendary producer (Nirvana, Pixies, Slint, PJ Harvey) and frontman for Big Black, Schellac and Rapeman let loose on the highly-hyped hip-hop crew Odd Future after sharing a shuttle to the airport with them after a festival.
“They piled in, niggering everything in sight, motherfucking the driver, boasting into the air unbidden about getting their dicks sucked and calling everyone in the area a faggot,” Albini wrote on his Electrical Audio website. He then goes on to acknowledge the fine line between art and reality, and admits that hip-hop—Odd Future or otherwise—is not is his wheelhouse, before finally concluding that, “they go out of their way to make it clear that this is not a case of regular people making music about assholes, but assholes making music about being assholes.”
Tyler the Creator expectedly took to Twitter to defend himself and his crew, of course starting with the obvious sentiment that he doesn’t know who Steve Albini is (note the spelling of “Albini”):

I’m a fan of both, and I’m definitely taking Steve’s side on this one, but i feel conflicted. I shouldn’t expect much from Tyler, since he’s just another stupid teenager that makes some good music when it comes down to it, but i still feel disgusted that he would act like such an ignorant, arrogant prick to someone as prolific as Steve… Odd Future’s lyrics really don’t have as much merit when you realise they’re just generally assholes in the first place.

they are kinda fun to listen to, you know. Its a cool attitude they got going and I’m sure they’ll pass, but their concerts are pretty cool. Sorry you don’t like the music bro, but I think odd future understands that now’a'days it doesn’t work just being an artist, you have to be a performer, and you have to be distinct, whether its being a huge asshole or dressing in drag and other crazy outfits they’re no more lame that the bands you listen to.
