Ryan Crosson (Visionquest) Movement-Detroit Diary

Going back to Detroit every year for Movement festival is a special time for me and this year was no exception. In addition to the festival, it’s an opportunity to reunite with family and friends who I haven’t had a chance to see since Christmas. Unfortunately, Memorial Day weekend is always lightning fast and the reunions are always shorter than I wish they could be.

Saturday:
Getting to soundcheck around 10:30am the day is already overcast. Meeting Lee Curtiss, Seth Troxler and Shaun Reeves at Hart Plaza while the stages are still being constructed last minute. There is a feeling of nostalgia from years ago when I would pull all-nighters in order to prepare a live set for the weekend—some things never change. Lee and I had been up all night in an effort to create new material and at least a little of the work paid off I think.

During sound check, two new Curtiss bombs are pulsating with clean precision and the butterflies of excitement start to tremble. While I always am nervous when presenting my own material in a set, when performing with Lee my confidence definitely notches up a few levels.

Once show time comes around, the rain begins to fall. It was pretty much a non-stop downpour from about 15 minutes before our set until it ended. Despite this (and the fact that Richie Hawtin goes on half way through our set on another stage) the crowd stays with us with that really committed intense vibe that only really bad weather can bring. Some of our parents were in attendance as well, which made the performance that much more meaningful. We end up playing for a full hour longer than we were supposed to until Seth and Shaun finally wrap up the evening (and close the stage) with new and as yet unreleased hits from our new signing Laura Jones and Dinky. After this, and despite the horrible weather, we return to our hotel elated.
