Richie Hawtin Throws First “Warehouse” Party in Detroit Since 2002

Richie Hawtin has announced the return of his legendary Control parties, this weekend at the Movement Detroit techno festival. The party marks the first time Hawtin and his event team will attempt an all-night party in Detroit following nine years of club events in his hometown.

Control started life in 2001. Allientated by the drama that surrounded the second annual DEMF, Hawtin decided to exclude himself from the main event and instead throw his own nighttime party. It was billed as a Jak party, a continuation of a series of events Hawtin threw in the mid-’90s, including Jak, Jak-O-Lantern and Jak’s Back. These infamous events were famous mainly for the “The System,” an immense soundsystem that Hawtin once described as so loud he couldn’t read the labels on his records due to the vibrations. The event took place at City Club, a long-running goth nightclub located in Detroit’s disrepaired Ramada Hotel.

The event was a rousing success, one of the first afterparties to compete/complement DEMF’s daytime line-up. At the end of summer, Hawtin threw a second event at City Club, now renamed Control. A third Control was thrown during DEMF 2002, a legendary event that ran from Saturday night until late-afternoon on Sunday (possibly the longest single event in Detroit history). The final Control event took place before Thanksgiving 2002, when the party featuring Hawtin and Sven Vath was shut down by police.

Control 2011 eturns to City Club on Saturday May 28 with Hawtin and Magda offering up what will surely be an unforgettable night of unadulterated techno. The event is being produced in conjunction with Movement promoters Paxahau. Pre-sale tickets are available here.
