In Flagranti
Worse For Wear
In Flagranti are back with their third album. The London and Basel-based duo was inspired by one of their favorite places to spend time: 1970s/80s New York City. They never produce their music while being physically together, so their sonic collage of twisted sounds from an era that people try to forget is created in in different time zones while jamming in cyber space. Worse For Wear Spans over 10 tracks ranging anywhere from 5 to 9 minutes in length.
The title track opens with footsteps merging with a beat and repetitive vocals that are both dark and Sexy. It sounds like a sleazy back alley boogie. “Prelude To Chaos” smells like an 80’s action movie soundtrack and cheap wine, while “Hallow Discourse” has the funkiest and fattest bassline since leather pants. You expect Donna Summer or Debbie harry to jump out of nowhere and groove to the dirty Disco and sloppy handclaps. “Latter-Day Methods” is a marinade of twisted synths, dubby disco and warped beats. It’s an addictive track, and sound like nothing you’ve heard before. Another strong track is “Peculiar Protagonist,” an up-tempo affair with goofy drums, funky female voice samples and a steady beat.
In Flagranti are easily compared to Dance-Punk/Electronic music like LCD Soundsystem and The DFA, or earlier Post-Punk and No Wave movements, but they have crafted their own little dirty stew of organic sounds and synthetic taste. They’re outsiders with a mutant style, and their new album isn’t all about fun and dirty times. They dig a little deeper and softer on several tracks, giving the listener a taste of Cosmic-Disco and Italo-lounge, but you still feel like take a shower after listening through the whole album.
