Pierre LX – Out 1 (Review)

Pierre LX

Out 1

Released by Initial Cuts

London-based, Paris-born and Brazil-raised Pierre LX is ready with his debut album Out 1. He learned how to make music on a cheap keyboard, and he was DJ’ing on a laptop already in 2002. He’s now done a reverse evolvement and only plays vinyl. He does regular sets at Fabric, and you can hear heavy hints of UK Bass in his productions.

Out 1 consists of eight pieces that were improvised on machines in his home studio, and each track was recorded as a continuous live take, using hardware only.  It opens with “Winter Light,” a slow burner with rich textures. It keeps teasing you; building up to a non-climax, and instead of a pumping straight 4/4 beat the track keeps on juggling in a syncopated Broken Beat rhythm. “Overflow” follows, but don’t let the title fool you. The track is atmospheric, but almost shy; the understated production holds back and showers you with synthetic synths. “Quadrium” is the strongest cut on the record. A minimal and moody start builds up with sub-bass, handclaps and oldskool House hi-hats. Finally a thumping 4/4 steadily takes charge, and together with ice cold handclaps and warm synths it has a hypnotizing effect. “Olympia” stretches to nearly 10 minutes, but you’ll be rewarded if you take the ride: halfway through an analog and minimal synth beat builds up to a transcending rhythm that seems to go on forever without sounding old.

Out 1 demands patience from the listener. There are no cheap thrill and whistles, the production is subtle and restrained. On a good day it will work perfectly in the background or when you’re just staring empty out in a room, but on a bad day it will frustrate you and make you beg for it to get to the point. It floats around the peripheries of electronic music and slips between genres just like Pearson Sound. It’s House with Techno furniture and a Bass basement
