Once again, all things progress towards the behemoth of a festival that is Coachella. Mary Anne Hobbs takes us along the way, as she travels through California in search of great bass adventures, and emergency dentistry. More after the jump…
MARY ANNE HOBBS
ROAD WARRIOR Tour Diary for URB
PART 2
12 midnight in Indio, CA. Sucking on a dessert which contains 1892 calories. I’ve been awake 37 hours straight. I need it.
Friday night in San Francisco was absolutely jubilant…
Shooting tequila with my great hero Kode9 who plays like Zeus. Watching Roska teach the bashful Joy Orbison how to throw a fist in the air. Hearing Lorn devastate 1015 Harriet with his ‘Fuck Your Life’ b-line. Extraordinarily, Dials, the promoter, informs me that Black Eyed Peas rolled-up in a limo outside and want to hook-up.
Crazy airport queues at 5am. It’s bedlam. Gonja Sufi and I are openly wondering why aircraft don’t carry parachutes instead of life-jackets. It makes perfect sense to both of us!
LA is hot and dirty just the way I like it. We spent several hours yesterday searching for a dentist to perform root canal work on my agent Sara. We were quoted $1800 dollars. Once we’d figured out how much Vicodin and whiskey we could get hold of with that kind of money, we decide to self-medicate haha!! However, her jawline is now beginning to resemble Dolph Lungren’s, so we need an emergency layover in Hollywood for some sensible treatment.
As we roll onto the dusty Coachella site, I calculate we have not stopped moving for 31 hours, and I’m almost delirious in the 100 degree desert heat. Sam XL who’s curated the spectacular Bass Oasis stage at Coachella is clinging bodily to his rig to stop it being torn down as Odd Future storm the stage with Lil B.
My friends Jakes, The Gaslamp Killer, Tokimonsta, Daedelus & Laura Darlington are there to catch me in their arms as I tumble from the stage after a mind-blowing experience exchanging a passion for future sound with the massive Coachella crowd. I’m so high on the most exquisite of emotional distillations, I could weep.
Next it’s onto my favourite club on earth, Low End Theory in Lincoln Heights, L.A. on Wednesday night. Check back soon…
