Caural returns to say goodbye, also as Boy King Islands (MP3)

When last heard from, Chicago/New York beat maker was having a laugh while paying homage to the spirit of hip hop with the chopped up “yo” sampling mayhem of “Sorry, Underground Hip Hop Happened Ten Years Ago (For Regan)” and it seems that actually was just about the last to be heard from Caural.

Dutch label Eat Concrete will release “Die Before You Die” featuring that track and three others April 15 on 10” and digitally. The release represents the last batch of songs Zak Mastoon finished as Caural but far from leftovers, these are polished representations of his distinct choppy beats.

And while Caural might not have anything else in the plans, Mastoon’s new project Boy King Islands is set to launch in May with the Eat Concrete release of the LP Fall. A collaboration between Mastoon and good friend Jason Hunt that came together over the course of several years, the fuzzy post-shoegaze of Boy King Islands begins from a different musical inclination than the glitch-borne beats of Caural. Mastoon and Hunt have been making music together since childhood and began the project while roommates more than 8 years ago. Fellow childhood friend Keith Kreuser (also known as K-Kruz) pitched in, engineering the studio sessions that sprung from those home recordings. Depending on how you look at things, it’s an impressive debut or simply an extension of Mastoon’s quality work.
