When I got a random, exclamation-laden email a couple of weeks back telling me to check out some mega-film on YouTube called “Counting Cavemen”, truth be told, I was tempted to disregard it (unsolicited submissions are annoying kids, don’t do it!) but, clicked the link within anyway. What I found, to my surprise, was a really inspiring hybridized-media series of promos for a 155 minute full-length remix record (take that Girl Talk!). As it turns out, “Counting Cavemen” is the brainchild of the mega-turntablist DJ Sleeper, the guy is SUPER devoted, and if you don’t believe me, check this out. His Cavemen LP is split into 7 connecting chapters with different musical themes that take us through the life & death of a caveman. This shit is so impressive that I don’t want to waste any more of your time telling you how the guy’s DJed for everyone from Diddy to Jay-Z, nor how his music has already been featured everywhere from ESPN to MTV, so maybe I’ll just say that if you need a lesson about hard work and sacrificing for your artistic craft this is as good example of doing that as any. Shocking impact with his mix with his videos — his strength lasts throughout this gigantic 7-chapter project.
In the final Chapter 7, At 15:55, the lady’s open heart seems like an image of a \CAVE\.
I looked at Chapter 5-6 to see how he wraps it up, truly powerful and amazing.
I like the little kid moving her legs (7:45), the old movies (9:24),
and especially
the long sustaining upward glissando effect (8:22, 8:26).
I like how Sleeper added the gradual glissando (8:33 – 8:57). It is so pulse-driven , the peak moment among many peaks.
This album is insanely good. Sleeper is the man!!!
One of my favorite albums of the year, creativity in the way music was fused with video was inspiring especially the last couple of movements
