Gaspard Auge (Justice) Talks New Album and Film Soundtrack

Following several years of relative silence, there’s been some movement from the Justice camp, with a new single, “CIVILIZATION” promised next month and appearing in an Adidas ad. But there’s been more happening in the background, including Gaspard Auge participation on the soundtrack for Rubber, the a new film by director and electro auteur Quentin Dupieux (aka Mr. Oizo). Gaspard is usually considered the “quiet one” in Justice interviews, but URB got to ask him a few questions about the new project and of course, what’s up with his day job?

How did you first get involved with Rubber? Did Quinten approach you?

I’ve always had a soft spot for beards, so it was very natural to go and work with Quentin. Quentin is really a very straight-forward guy, music and movie-wise there no happy ending. There’s nothing expectable, and this is really rare and highly enjoyable.

How was the working relationship when making music? In what ways was it different from working with Xavier in Justice?

I spend so much time with Xavier that we think alike, speak alike, eat alike, which is quite convenient for the Justice project. Working with Oizo was good to temper this identity crisis, same for Xavier to produce Jamaica’s record.

Are you a fan of the types of B-movies as Rubber? Wondering if there’s similar movies that made an impact musically that you looked to for inspiration.

I’m not too keen on B-movies. I do think it’s a luxury you can afford when you’re done with the A-movies, I still have to watch all of those, but Rubber is amazingly free, with none of all the so-called indie movies codes and clichés. Quentin is to me the last or the first of the mohicans.

Lots of electronic producers over the years always talk about wanting to do soundtrack work. Is that something you had ambitions for, or did this happen by accident? Has the experience opened you up to some new opportunties?

For me it was the perfect opportunity as most of my melodic ideas come from french movies scores. It’s a blend between François De Roubaix, Vladimir Cosma, Philip Glass and a chainsaw. But it’s not something we would be interested in for Justice, as we love the “pop” format of it.

OK, obviously, Justice has been quiet for some time now. What’s happening?
New single “CIVILIZATION” out in April, new album next fall.
