This week’s mix is an absolute bevy of floor-smashing material courtesy of the young and prolific producer extraordinaire, Melé. While’s he’s only been around and about for about year or so, he has already achieved so much in a short time. Garnering attention from BBC Radio 1, the jack-of-all-musical-trades Sinden as well as URB favorite Ikonika, Melé’s tunes find a way to build up, break down and throw down something exciting and evocative on a dancefloor. Along with an incredibly stellar mix he did for URB, Melé took the time to answer some questions about his origins and his upcoming releases in the coming year. URB: Who is Melé and what are his origins?

MELE: Until I was about 11, I had no interest in music at all, my dad used to always have Ibiza CD’s lying about & I remember telling him I’d never be into any of that!  When I was 12 I got into hip-hop; I used to take my Mum to Virgin Megastore in Liverpool and she would buy me hip-hop vinyl every month or so, I’ve still got a few of them now!

URB: When and how did you start DJing/making tunes?

M: My uncle was a producer so I got into it because it looked fun.  I had turntables when I was 13/14 but I started learning to DJ when I was about 16.

URB: You’ve sort of blown up really quickly in the last year or so, what do you think attributed to that?

M: I suppose its down to the DJ’s and people that have been supporting my music.  It’s been cool to have support from the people I’ve been listening to for years.

URB: You’ve got a bunch of releases coming out on different labels, what’s coming up and for whom, exactly?

M: First up is my EP on Sinden’s label, Grizzly. Three tracks that are essentially house tunes as well as two great remixes from Mensah & Sinden.  I’m also doing a 12″ for Ikonika and Optimum’s label Hum and Buzz, which is going to be a bit different to what I’ve done before (160 BPM stuff).  I’m also working on another EP for Mixpak!

URB: Biggest 2011 goal for Melé:

M: To make as much music as possible & to do more traveling all over the globe.
