It’s doubtful that Ellie Goulding is actually from our present time, or even our present planet. Maybe she’s from The Matrix or something. All speculations aside regarding her otherworldliness, the allegedly 23 year-old englishwoman sure is something else. Selling over 300,000 albums this year and earning such honorable accolades as Critics’ Choice at the 2010 BRIT awards and a #1 spot on the BBC Sound of 2010 poll, Goulding has a lot to be happy about. The singer-sonwriter’s instantly addictive melodies gracefully walk the line between electro and acoustic, allowing her to make basically any type of record she wants while still remaining true to her signature style. And it seems she’s been doing just that: ”Starry Eyed” gives off an uptempo ambience, “Under The Sheets” is as drum-heavy and head-nodd worthy as it is gourgeously reflective, and Ellie’s lead single “Lights” is ahead-of-the-curve hooky pop at its finest. Goulding’s vocals are as alluring as they are unique, and her songwriting has an insightfulness and poetic perspective one would only expect from a person far beyond the young singer’s years. In case her 2010 accomplishments weren’t enough, Ellie doesn’t seem to be slowing up as the new year approaches: She’s already released a fantastic cover of Elton John’s “Your Song” (which Elton has openly praised), and continues to be remixed by just about everybody. Although Ellie’s made much larger waves across the pond, America should prepare themselves, because if things keep going like they are, Ellie will be making quite a splash (ew, puns…) in our neck of the woods come 2011.
