Birthdays, Beats & Rob Fernandez – The King of NYC

If you have ever hit a club in NYC chances is are Rob Fernandez helped make that memorable night happen in some capacity.  URB recently sat down with Rob on the heals of Pacha’s 5th birthday and his impending birthday bash to discuss all things celebratory in and about the New York nightlife.  If you are unfamiliar with who Rob is we won’t hold that against you… even though he has taken home multiple Dancestar & Club World Awards for his events in the last three years not to mention the last two decades.  He’s not one to bask, too much, in the spotlight.  If that weren’t enough he also has a few other accolades under his belt, most notably “New Yorker of the Year”, not an easy feat in Gotham City.  So a big thanks to the man for giving us his time to take a hilarious look back as well as a a positive glance at the future for electronic music in the US.  Make the jump after the interview for a little present and info from Rob should you be headed or in the NYC area.

URB – It appears that another birthday is upon you Rob, how are you feeling after another year?  Looking forward to the next?

Rob Fernandez – Do I have a choice?!

U – Touché. Word on the street is that this is your 137th birthday… this would almost make you the Gandalf of NYC Nightlife!  What is your response to
the nay sayers who might not think you’re gonna rock NYC for another 137 years?

RF – I just googled Gandalf… THAT’S NOT VERY FLATTERING.

U – Hey, Gandalf has some serious skills though not to mention great hair! Do you ever throw yourself the perfect birthday party with just the right music and crowd or did you give up on that in your 90’s and just let it ride?

RF – You have to just go with it, One thing for sure is that things never go 100% as planned. I remember one New Year’s Eve planning our “Big Balloon Drop” for the stroke of midnight. So we do the countdown “3..2…1 HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!” and one lonely balloon comes floating down. Not an impressive moment for me.  The other thousand balloons were stuck in the ceiling and came down sometime around 1 am.  In the end it turned out to be a great moment though because no one expected it.
