The Roots Score New Black Panther-Inspired Film

Say you’re making a film about a former Black Panther returning home to Philadephia in 1976. Who could you possibly get to score the film, whose music would fit perfectly against original soul classics from the era? If you answered anything but The Roots, then we need to have a serious talk.

Of course ?uestlove and Co. were recruited to craft the original music for first time director Tanya Hamilton’s Night Catches Us. The film stars Anthony Mackie (who played Tupac in Notorious) and Kerry Washington (Ray, Fantastic Four) along with two of our faves from The Wire, Wendell (Bunk) Williams and Jamie (Marlo!) Hector. The Roots own Black Thought also makes an appearance in the film.

You can hear some of the original score in the preview for the film. Amazing how perfectly it blends with Johnson’s “Is It Because I’m Black.”
