Good things come to those who wait, huh? About a year ago, I remember wishing the almighty two-in-one combo of 2562/A Made Up Sound would do a mix for URB; that unfortunately didn’t happen, so time went on doing its thing. Then one day, this mix showed up courtesy of 2562 and the lovely people at Fabric. Blending techno, house, and “future-bass”, 2562/AMUS is a technically sound and superb selective DJ, and along with a quick Q/A, he gave URB something to be happy about going into the holidays. URB x 2562/A Made Up Sound Q/A

URB: You have two production aliases; why the separation of 2562 and A Made Up Sound, what makes them particularly different from one another?

2562: 2562 was inspired by early dubstep – when it was all about musical freedom and proper low end – and pretty much mutated into freestyle-on-bass. I don’t know what to call it or where it belongs. Sub bass and experiment are the only fixed ingredients.

A Made Up Sound, the lesser known but longer-going of the two, is rooted in classic house and techno, but aiming to push it forward. I’m serious about that, anyone who believes everything has already been done over the past twenty-five years is a cynic or just has no fantasy. I believe it is innovation and soul that define the true techno spirit, not the 4/4 kickdrum, the 909 or what works in ‘techno’ clubs these days.

Both projects are always wandering and may even cross paths sometimes, but for myself it is usually crystal clear what is what.

URB: Do you have a personal preference in terms of DJ sets/selection under a certain guise?

2562: Not really, I’ve had good and bad gigs under both names. My only preference is freedom to play anything, mix it all up, simply play good music rather than a particular style.

If I get booked as 2562 it will lean more towards – for lack of better words – ‘future bass music’. As A Made Up Sound, house and techno will be the starting point. With both I will try to stray from the path and see how far the audience is willing to come with me. I’m not there to spoil everyone’s evening, so I’m happy to play an all-house or all-bass set if it suits the occasion best. As long as it’s music I’m truly feeling. I will never compromise that. No dj should.

URB: What’s next for 2562/A Made Up Sound?

2562: There will be new 2562 material in the shops early 2011 and I’m fine-tuning my first ever liveset to perform it. That’s all I can say for now. DJ-wise I’m looking towards a lot of travelling. A techno weekend as AMUS in New York and Philly later this month, a Japan tour in January and a full 2562 North-American tour mid February to early March. A couple of Europe/UK dates in between. I’ve been a bit of a studio hermit this autumn so I’m looking forward to get going again.

URB: Finally, what would you like people to experience out of a 2562/AMUS set?

2562: I’d hope they feel they ended up in a different place than where they started, danced to music they hadn’t danced to before and were surprised a couple of times along the way. If that sounds terribly pretentious, just shaking your booty and having a good time is also fine by me.
