Seph
Alquimia
Acclaimed Argentinian producer Seph debuts his intricate and experimental brand of techno on Alquimia–an alchemy of sonic textures two years in the making.
Channeling the more ambient side of down-tempo, Seph shines on the track”El Arroyo De Effo”–a spooky, Tricky-esque piece laced with samples of dripping faucets and ticking clocks. Equally satisfying is”Lemon Hideout”–the super abstract album opener where Seph seems to have taken quirky cues from Los Angeles jazz great, Eric Dolphy, circa “Out To Lunch”. Also notable is “Casualidad”– a percussion heavy, bouncy techno track that one might move wildly to at a rave party.
With the exception of these three noteworthy pieces, Seph’s insistence on left-field compositions that lack choruses put Alquimia in the “acquired tastes only” category–possibly turning some of the most ardent lovers of down-tempo and techno all the way off. Perhaps Seph is far ahead of his time? Perhaps his extraordinary choices are just over our heads? My strong advice to curious ears: choose Alquimia at your own risk.
