The digital quill is in need of a refill (and a bottle of Nyquil after a mind-bending Devil’s Night/All Hallow’s Eve) so here’s a few burnt offerings at the Tabernacle of Fractured Journalism better known as the blogosphere.
The first official single from Lupe Fiasco’s hoped-for swan song, Lasers (although Atlantic has other ideas for the talented MC who still can’t live down botching “Electric Relaxation” at VH1’s Hip-Hop Honors 2007). Riffing on Modest Mouse is a move that could backfire for some of the Chicagowin’s more left-of-center devotees but the song is by no means a misstep. Let your own cochlear nerves be the judge:

Unheralded Canadian cat Miles Jones must be doing something right as well (like having a family member in the biz pulling some strings? We’re leering at you Mr. Degrassi Next Generation). Rising through the ranks of the largely untapped metropolis of Toronto (OK, we’ll give you Drake, Saukrates & Kardinal Offishall) and recruiting the likes of Boi 1-da, Black Milk and Percee P for 2009’s Canadian release of Runaway Jones off his own Mojo Records imprint. You heard the showpiece but there’s more in store as the MC tries to extend his reach beyond the Great White North. You crazy Canucks can check out his steez on his blog roll but if you’re like me, baby need spoon-feeding and wet-nursing:

Lastly, there will be no more mention of Mr. Beautiful Overwrought Twisted Fantasy, but there will be mention of another Pete Rock resurgence. While Premier tends to bless his salacious Stanleys at least a couple times a month, the Chocolate Boy Wonder (he of the recent recycled classics format) seems way more reluctant to show his wares. There’s the Smif-N-Wessun collaboration album in the pipeline for Duck Down and a couple other jewels floating around but after last Friday’s leak of the Curtis Mayfield-infused, “The Joy,” there was much rejoicing amongst hip-hop’s Holy Grail seekers. You already heard it, but some of you need to listen until the hate drains from your arteries:
