URB: What are the origins of Urban Tribe?
Urban Tribe: Urban Tribe originated with the release of “Covert Action” on Retroactive records in 1990. I programmed it and Carl put a final mix to it at Metroplex, A few years later Shake and Ken became involved.
How would you characterize the evolution of Urban Tribe, sound-wise
throughout the years?
I don’t think there has been a linear path of evolution but more of a branch type pattern. After the first Lp the next two were more uptempo and reflective of my tools and state of mind at the time. The most recent release I would say is more mid-tempo dance with some echoes of the “The Collapse”.
Stylistically, what does Urban Tribe have that Stingray doesn’t?
I think the Urban Tribe projects are more low key and evoke a more relaxing mood whereas Stingray is more energetic and raw. It’s not that I’m saying one is lacking or better than the other it’s just that they come from different places.
How’s the Urban Tribe live performance coming around? Will there be an
American debut? What gear is used and such?
The Urban Tribe live is coming along ok but i will admit that it’s a lot more complex than I anticipated! *laughs* With so many schedule issues it’s tough to get cats together. The support from fans in EU has been fantastic. While there is nothing official to share at the moment, expanding UT’s presence in North America in the future is defintiely something I am exploring.
What does the future hold for Urban Tribe?
You will hear an expansion of the sound and there will be the involvement of other artists like Mariska Neerman,Nina Kravitz , Pilar Bauman and more. I’m really looking forward to the future and my energy levels are through the roof right now. In our field of electronic music it’s all about your creativity first because without it you’re no different than a random person who walks into an electronics store and taps out a song on a demo keyboard. As electronic artists we don’t have to rely on cliche entertainment themes and formulas because for most of us the audio is the priority. With that said I think the future holds much promise for UT and any serious electronic artist.
