Five New Ninjas To Watch

After 20 years, most labels would shut down their A&R and coast on the veteran artists who brought them success. But for Ninja Tune and sister label Big Dada, the two decade anniversary seems like a catalyst for taking chances, with over a dozen releases by young artists either dropped in 2010 or scheduled for 2011. Here’s a quick look at some of the new blood.

ESKMO

Brendan Angelides is a man that makes vivid tunes under the guise of Eskmo. With tunes released on Planet Mu, Warp and now comfortably under the Ninja Tune umbrella, his sound reflects West Coast vibes that break the boundaries of post-dubstep sounds and synthetic wobbles. The sounds that embody the moniker of Eskmo are mysteriously soulful and satisfying simultaneously.

TODDLA T
Toddla T makes “proper Sheffield music” which is a mash of bassline, dancehall and everything bonkers. His Sheffield roots are strong with music, as it is the original home of WARP Records and home to an ever-interesting music scene. Providing lively and often multi-faceted DJ sets, Toddla T is the current badman of this current generation of DJs.

PARIS SUIT YOURSELF
Another rocking first—this time for Ninja’s sister label Big Dada—Paris Suit Yourself bring a tribal guitar and percussion noise taken straight from continental Europe’s free-party squatter scene. Their first record is due in early-2011, so keep an eye out for these post-punk inspired noisemakers.

DELS
With a debut single produced by Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard, Kieren Dickins is ready to take-up the mantle of far out UK hip-hop previously held by Dizzee Rascal, The Streets and Ninja Tune legend Roots Manuva. His first album, powered by producers Goddard, Micachu, Kwes and Sampha, awaits a release date from Big Dada.
