I.D. & BAOBINGA Step Heavy on Low End (MP3)

Baobinga & I.D.

There’s no city in the UK quite like Bristol for those who like their bass large, in charge, and the sonic equivalent of a wayward barge hitting you upside the head.

Home to some of the world’s foremost musical innovators such as Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky, Joker, and Roni Size, Britain’s capital of low end – situated in the west of England – positively throbs with bass laced throughout all of it’s musical output. Jungle, drum ‘n’ bass, trip hop, and the recently emerging ‘purple’ scene all can claim that some branches of their respective family trees originate in Brizzle. Science heads take note: in this town of good vibrations it’s a quasi-proven fact that all birds, trees, mailboxes and giraffes within the city limits constantly hum at 30Hz.

Devoted to the evolution of the low sound, Bristol residents I.D. & Baobinga are a DJ and production duo who are resolutely pushing things forward in crafting their unique brand of fresh, uptempo, bass-heavy breakstep.

I.D. & Baobinga first met while doing the same music technology degree course at Salford University in Manchester ten years ago.

“We had a shared love of jungle and raging Amen breaks” says Bao. “Sankey’s [seminal Manchester nightclub] had just come back from hiatus and were doing some wicked jungle and techno nights with DJs like Craze and Marky. I saw Jeff Mills play at the club and it was one of the best nights of my life. Clubbing-wise that is, obviously! (laughs) Other nights of my life have been good too!”

“We spent a lot of time at a night called Fuse at a club called the Roadhouse where they played early breakbeat and electro and speed garage, all sorts of stuff. The Electro Sluts who were DJing there at the time were a massive influence on us getting into music.”
