Qbert Is “America’s Best DJ”

In a surprising bit of news, DJ Times and Pioneer DJ announced today that the winner of their annual fan-voted America’s Best DJ contest is none other than turntablist legend DJ Qbert. Surprising because, while it goes without question that  the member of the SF crew Invisibl Skratch Piklz isn’t one of the finest turntable technicians to ever cue up a record, his recent profile as a performer has been somewhat low-key, especially when compared to 2009 winner Z-Trip and 2008 champ Paul Oakenfold. The contest took some serious flack this year when it included Jersey Shore star DJ Pauly D in it’s list of 100 nominees, a move that many viewed as a cynical move by the contest organizers to draw more mainstream appeal. The ove even prompted Z-Trip to speak out via Twitter.

But in the end, hair gel was no match for skill and taste, as not only did Qbert take first place, but he was followed by American house superstar Kaskade and turntablist turned electro star A-Trak in second and third place respectively.

Qbert will received the coveted gold-plated DJ mixer in a ceremony at The Palms Hotel & Casino in Vegas on October 2. He will also perform at Rain Nightclub for Paul Oakenfold’s Planet Perfecto party. Here’s hoping that Vegas nightclub is more forgiving than when Jazzy Jeff was booted off the decks at rival Vegas club Surrender last month during a tribute to DJ AM.
