2 Mo’ Gin: Reef The Lost Cauze “OPG Theme”/J-Swift “I’ll Do Mine” (MP3)

Nice Pair

Last night in Philly, Prince Paul was on the wheels at a shi-shi spot, only 5 bones before 11. Sorta made me sad for us aging heads, the man that DJ’ed for Stetsasonic, brought us De La Soul, tutored 3rd Bass and helped turn the phrase Dan The Automator into something of a household name through the legendary Handsome Boy Modeling School project (has anyone heard from Dan lately?), had been reduced to rocking for a buncha Rittenhouse drunktards and deluded musician types (myself included). I guess money is money, dough.

That self-indulgence aside, I must pass along another couple of joints to check for, the first accompanied by another anecdote that all four of my readers have come to expect and revile. I don’t have satellite radio in the car but my fancy friends do; I consider it a treat to check up on Toca Tuesdays & more importantly Live From Headqcortez every so often. Last Friday on a harrowing trip down the eastern seaboard with my homie Mr. Slave, we’re bumping Primo & Panchi’s show somewhere in bumblefuck North Carolina. Primo’s running through his first half hour of programming (a lot of Bun-B and other assorted exclusives) when I hear the voice of Reef The Lost Cauze over a sick Stu Bangaz intro. I had heard the song before (featuring Burke The Jerk & Vinnie Paz, all three MC’s funeral parlor this piece), even liked it, but it means just a little bit more when it’s cued up on Premier’s Serato interface. A relentlessly Philly-sounding banger for your benzi box:

The second track has a real nostalgic element to it. The other member of The Pharcyde who fell victim to addiction after his mid-90’s run on Delicious Vinyl, J-Swift, is back with a single:

Acid flashbacks to ‘94 are inevitable as the vintage-sounding cut features St. Imey of The Wascals. The song appears on the soon-to-be-released cautionary documentary 1 More Hit, a chronicle of the producer’s struggles with and triumphs over that old monkey on the back.

“I told you a long time ago, you fucking little monkey, not to fuck me…”

Seriously, fuck that monkey.
