15 Minutes: Jim-E Stack

For the next couple of weeks I’ll be starting out a new column called 15 Minutes highlighting and showcasing some cool new acts you might have yet to hear. For the inaugural release I present, Jim-E Stack.

I remember meeting baby J-Stack now Jim-E Stack last year at the Danny Masterson Party for Lolla. I thought he was like 24 at first or at least his musical taste and personality are that of someone who isn’t freshly a high school grad. Jim-E who resides in San Francisco in such a short amount of time has not only set a footprint in LA, SF and NYC but even has remixed and garnered the ears of some heavy hitters in the club/dance scene. Jim-E can be somewhat of a symbol as to what music is becoming in the new decade, which I like to call Bedroom Rock.

Even Lauren Flax-Detroit import to Brooklyn-recorded parts of her infamous song, “You’ve Changed” with Sia in her apartment. Dance music much like any other music is being taken back not just by the talent but even in terms of power and freedom, well unless you go major. It’s also springing up new labels, new cliques and a fusion of sounds which is reminiscent of the early years of House. Even Rostam Batmanglij-Vampire Weekend mega producer-has tweeted about how he fills up his gallery of hard drives with sounds recorded in his apartment.

Jim-E recently spent the Summer in Brooklyn interning at Trouble and Bass where he was able to hopscotch around and soaked in all that interny goodness. He performed at the Mishka Fourth of July Party with the likes of NinjaSonik, Roofeo, Tittsworth, Chronic Youth etc. which was also spotlighted on G4.

I like Jim-E’s music, it’s hot, young, fun and experimental and also just him. With remixes like Caribou that sound like some gaudy 1987 piano lounge House to his kick ass remix of Yeasayer O.N.E; he has a certain taste which takes people years to develop. There is no evidence of him trying to sell a certain number of tracks or keeping himself afloat with record sales. It’s really what any type of anything is before you have responsibilities like a family, rent or having to feed yourself. You can hear many of his remixes and original productions on his myspace or soundcloud. Jim-E should be a tiny reminder and shove as to how complaining and groaning about how you can’t make it is nothing short of an excuse. Clearly if you have a twitter, drive and a personality you too can be written about or simply adored for a minute or so.
