With the pressure of the looming Pixies jaunt to play Brisbane, Grand Duchy set their collective noses to the grindstone. Immediately the work became fun again. With a kind of letting go, husband and wife began futzing with each other’s songs in true collaborative fashion, and even going so far as contributing lyrics for the other to sing. “Suddenly, we’re like getting up in each others’ business together,” Clark says, with completely liberating results. “We’re just way less uptight this time. We’re having ten million thousand times more fun recording this time. It’s very freeing.”
Freeing, and fruitful. With the Duke and Duchess mixing and mingling their particular talents not just outwardly, but within the inner mechanisms of each song… well, as Clark says, they’re “lovin’ it,” waiting to see where their revived artistic intermingling will take them next. “I’m more psychological and he’s more visual,” she says of her and Charles’ individual lyrical styles. “We’re just sort of absurdists. This is just about going into the studio and flying by the seat of your pants. You use a different part of your brain. You surprise yourself.”
