Mogwai “Burns” Right Through To The Soul

No Tags

So, I’ve been sitting on this for quite some time, as I have been away from this blog for a minute now (sorry!), but, in my absence I got to screen one of the more exciting and unique music documentaries to come along in a long while and all I have to say to it is that: Mogwai’s Burning comes at you only in a way French-made film can, with a baguette!trans Mogwai “Burns” Right Through To The Soul

Mogwai Burning

Ok, that’s not true, but, what is, that the forthcoming DVD is directed by La Blogotheque’s lensmen Vincent Moon and Nathanael Le Scouarnac and culminates from the pleasure and serene-ness of high-contrast, handheld videography and lucious, over-amplified sound (would you expect anything else from these notoriously LOUD guys) into a finale that’s dead-on in line with the spirit of the band’s infamous live shows. The gain/compression recorded onto the disc is juuust bothersome enough to be cool, much like the audiotry discomfort/euphoria of Mogwai’s live shows. The focus and stellar musicianship of the band is clearly evident in so many of the shots, just as it is when seeing them in person. The beautiful close-ups and varying perspectives really give off  the same sense of disorientation and ephemeral bliss as what can be experienced during one of the Mogwai’s live sets.

Branded as an hour-long DVD of the band’s three night stint at the Music Hall of Williamsburg last spring, Burning will hit stores August 24th, accompanied by a full-length live disc entitled Special Moves.

No word on who may have helped record the live album, but, what is certain is that the film just plain rocks. Highly recommended is saving all of your critical, film-watching energy for the end (the last 5 minutes really will knock your socks off) and just doing some proper head-nodding and beer-drinking in beginning to get a maximum “I was there” type of effect. It’ll feel so real you’ll want to brag to your friends.

Check out a little Batcat action for a sneak peak of Burning’s forthcoming awesomeness:
